Acupuncture has two different styles and all of the acupuncture techniques fall into these two categories. The first one is local point stimulate method and second one is visceral (remote) point stimulate method.

Most of the people familiar with the local point stimulate method. You have pain on your head you get acupuncture on your head. You have pain on your shoulder you get acupuncture on your shoulder. These points are focusing on the local area which has problem. Acupuncturist use points called Ashi points, trigger points or acupuncture points nearby the problem area.

While local points focus on local problem, visceral points focus on related organs and radical reasons of the problem. The location of the points seem nothing to do with the problem but it is related to the problem by the meridian theory. Meridians connects the whole body like the electrical circuit.
